Henna Leaves

A one act opera with libretto by Laura Barati, Henna Leaves follows best friends and Afghan poets Afia and Dorakshan as they fight to make their voices heard on opposite ends of the world.

Henna Leaves was originally developed as part of the American Opera Projects and NYU Advanced Opera Lab. It received a workshop reading at NYU and New York’s International House directed by Sam Helfrich (2017).

Uprising

Uprising is a one-act opera with libretto by Laura Barati. An exploration of the online Beta Male or Incel community, Uprising delves into the friendship of Josh and Devin, two self-professed Beta Males who connect on a message board. Using found text from Beta Male message boards, Uprising blends dark humor and tragedy to excavate the despair, pain, and humanity of the Beta Male community.
